Above: the cooking at Ava Gene’s in Portland, Oregon, serves classic and creative Italian cuisine with warm and inviting ambiance.
Few people outside the state are aware of the fact that Portland, Oregon is considered by many trade insiders to be leading Italian wine city in the U.S. today.
Not only are there a number of great Italian restaurants there but there is a general embrace and appreciation of Italian wine even beyond the community of Italian restaurateurs.
For whatever inexplicable reason, Portland and its residents just “get” Italian wine.
“Our Roman inspired menu is simple and rustic,” write the owners on their website, “with an emphasis on the best local produce and meats grown and raised by Pacific Northwest farmers and ranchers. A regional Italian wine list complements the spirit of the cuisine.”
Could it get any better than that?
We highly recommend it. It’s just one of those places where the true spirit of Italian wine and food really thrives…
