Two weeks ago, while I was visiting winemakers Alessandro Fenino and Silvia Loschi in Maiolati Spontini (Jesi), you could find wild asparagus on the edges of the vineyards.
Of course, when you farm grape biodynamically, there are all kinds of plants that grow spontaneously within and outside of the vineyards (like a renegade nettles bush that Alessandro showed me).
That’s part of the “balance” that biodynamic farming creates, he pointed out.
As I drove the next day from Maiolati Spontini through Matelica and then through the marchigiana country side, there were tractors along the roads where farmers were selling wild asparagus and red potatoes.
I’ll be posting more about my fascinating visit with Alessandro and Silvia next week…
